Help: Updating Names

Overview


Wolverine Access enables you to add, modify, or delete the preferred name of record. The University will use your preferred name of choice instead of your legal name in various University information systems. Before entering a preferred name, click the UM Preferred Names Policy link on the Current Names page and carefully consider the name you would like to be known as for University business. After adding or modifying your preferred name, your display name in the MCommunity directory will be updated within 24 hours.

Step-By-Step Instructions

Modifying an Existing Name

Notes:
  • Your preferred and primary names display.
  • Scroll down and review all names.
  • You can only modify your preferred name of record. If you need to have your legal name corrected, see the contact information at the bottom of the page.
  1. Click edit next to your preferred name.
  2. (Optional) Select a Prefix from the drop-down list.
  3. Replace the applicable fields for First NameMiddle Name, and Last Name.
    Note: Type the name(s) using mixed case. If your preferred name of record is only a single name, type a period (.) in the First Name field and type the name in the Last Name field.
  4. Click Save.
    Note: To cancel, click Return to Current Names.
  5. Click OK on the Save Confirmation page.

Adding a Preferred Name

Note: Your primary name (legal) displays.

  1. Click ADD A NEW NAME.
  2. Select Preferred Name of Record from the Name Type drop-down list.
  3. (Optional) Select a Prefix from the drop-down list.
  4. Type your preferred name in the First NameMiddle Name, and Last Name fields.
    Note: Type the name using mixed case. If your preferred name of record is only a single name, type a period (.) in the First Name field and type the preferred name in the Last Name field.
  5. Click SAVE.
    Note: To cancel, click Return to Current Names.
  6. Click OK on the Save Confirmation page.

Deleting a Preferred Name

Notes:
  • Your preferred and primary names display.
  • You can only delete your preferred name. If you delete your name, various University information systems will use your primary name instead.
  1. Click delete next to your preferred name.
    Note:  The date displays showing the date of the last name update you made on the Delete name page.
  2. Click DELETE.
    Note: To cancel, click Return to Current Names.
  3. Click YES - DELETE on the Delete Confirmation Page.
