This page is used by Faculty/Staff Members and Graduate Student Assistants who are required by federal regulations to certify their effort. Effort is the expenditure of physical and mental energy to perform and/or support the objectives of the university’s mission.
Effort certification is a self-attestation of an employee’s university activities for a stated time period. The federal government requires colleges and universities that receive federal funding to maintain a system of internal controls that provides reasonable assurance that charges to federal awards are accurate, allowable, and properly allocated.
Generally, individuals who are required to certify effort complete the process using the Effort Certification page in Wolverine Access: Employee Self Service > Employment Information tile. As part of the effort certification process, individuals who must certify their effort are required to review the effort certification education and complete the mandatory effort certification education quiz.
Faculty/Staff Members and GSAs are required to certify effort if they:- Perform sponsored activities, or
- Are compensated by cost sharing related to sponsored activities, or
- Are a Medical School faculty member who holds a MD
Graduate Student Assistants will see the current term and the previous eight terms. Once you certify a report, it cannot be updated unless a funding change occurs. If a funding change occurs, you will have access to re-certify your effort for that term.
Faculty/Staff Members will see the current fiscal year and the previous two fiscal years. Once you certify a report, it cannot be updated unless a funding change occurs. If a funding change occurs, you will have access to re-certify your effort for that fiscal year.
If changes are needed for a term or fiscal year that is available for viewing only, work with your administrative contact to determine whether an As-Needed Effort Certification Report is required.
